The First Quilt
My first art quilt attempt will be based on a quilt by Sue Benner* (page 144-145) titled The Hostess with the Mostest II. She says about this quilt:
The series began with a black and white cotton pique print from the skirt of a 1970s floor-length hostess dress I rescued from a garage sale at my mother’s house. My mother led me to fabric. She taught me to sew. She made me rip seams out and do them again. This quilt is a tribute to my mom, Joanne Benner, the hostess with the mostest.
My mother sewed but didn’t really teach me how to, I learned that in Home Ec (remember Home Ec!) She did teach me how to iron — but only because she hated ironing.
I was attracted to this quilt because of the black and white fabric and the circles. I love the graphical look of it. And, less artistically, it looks like a quilt I can handle at this stage.
*I’m hoping that the link is to the same Sue Brenner as in the book since she doesn’t mention the book on her site and the quilt in the book isn’t shown on the site.
